The word “purpose” has always been intimidating to me.
Many people will never find their life’s purpose. And, some will collide with it head on while in their second year of grad school, struggling to write their senior thesis (lol, yeah – that was me)!
But, I’ve always been a writer. Since elementary school, I constantly kept journals that I would fill chock full of stories, goals, dreams and my highest hopes. My journals were a glimpse into what I perceived my future to be. I planned it all -my dream home, my dream husband, my dream car… you name it! I was so obsessed with acquiring these materialistic items as signs of success but, it wasn’t until I grew up, that I realized the power of solidifying and living within my purpose.
With a BA in Political Science and an MPA in Urban Planning and Environmental Policy, there are always onlookers who question my choice of work. Like, “How did you get into fashion?” or “Why did you take that route?” and “Wow!? How’s THAT going!?” Of course, I smile dryly and remain optimistic but, in the back of my mind, I’m screaming louder than an angry 2-year-old.
True story: I actually stumbled upon fashion journalism. I was working a full-time job that I absolutely hated and I needed a creative outlet. Grad school was weighing heavy on my shoulders and I felt that an alternative solution for “mental comfort” was necessary. Now, I’ve been a loyal reader/fan of Fashion Bomb Daily since 2009 and when the Editor-in-Chief Claire Sulmers reached out for new interns – I jumped at the opportunity. Long story short: I’ve been working with the site for about a year and a half now and I couldn’t be happier!
Fashion Bomb Daily is my life. I wake up thinking about my daily posts and I go to sleep pondering future articles. This monumental and inspirational platform has also given me the opportunity to travel to New York City for the first time, experience Fashion Week (and all its snow), collaborate with some of the world’s most talented writers and work alongside some of the fashion’s most revered names including Tameka Raymond. Talk about a blessing!
This journey is simply amazing. My work for the #1 multicultural online magazine has also made a lasting impression on my life here in Houston. I’ve been so gracious to cross paths with some of the city’s up-and-coming stylists, designers and influencers including my girl/stylist Ashley Dunn, A Leap of Style’s Karissa Lindsay and Official Corporate Chic Mimi Irvin. In addition, I’ve also been place in a position to make my voice known – which is beyond rewarding.
Overall, this rollercoaster of an experience is just beginning! I’ve come to learn more about my purpose in the past year than anything else. Throughout my life, I want to touch the hearts of others through my words. With my passion for fashion, I’m also aiming to help women look and feel their best – regardless of size, income level, ethnicity, etc. I want to use my God-given gift to help make a difference in the world. I do want to work for a major publication, I do want to become a fashion editor… I want the world! And, I deserve nothing less…
… And, neither do you.
So, to VOGUE magazine – I’m coming for you!
Thanks for reading!
