Networking and Why You Need It to Survive in the Real World

As “Old Time Rock n Roll” by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band blasts through the Pandora app, I’m coming to you guys with a bit of knowledge.

Back in my college days, I never really understood the importance of networking. Yeah, I knew that it was crucial to any kind of professional advancement but actually learning the methods behind solidifying such pertinent relationships was a bit daunting for me. I was the type of student who would sit back and let things come their way, not knowing that good things come to those who hustle (hard).

But, fast forward a few years later, and networking is a part of my everyday life!

all-white-3
I met “The Session” tv show host Kia Renee at an all-white Labor Day Party a few months back. She’s such a sweet spirit!

When I started contributing to Fashion Bomb Daily, I was thrust into this world that I knew absolutely nothing about. Fashion was like a second language and I struggled with learning the ins and outs of its ultra-inclusive industry. I challenged myself to step outside my comfort zone and try new things (hence, attending a shitload of Houston events and fashion shows) and soon the walls of doubt and fear came tumbling down like Jericho!

I’ve realized that networking is like dancing. You walk into the room and catch the mellow, steady bump of the beat and you start to move your body accordingly. You may throw in a few dips, head bounces and even a fist pump but the entire process is organic. It’s not forced and it’s simply a way to let loose and open yourself up. Now, networking is more than just a Nae Nae around the room – it’s also a sure fire way to spread awareness of your upcoming brand, business or ideas!

I met my girl Darshay, a local stylist, at a networking event in Houston last year in 2016.

Due to consistent (and effective) networking, I can call some of Houston’s brightest fashionistas and writers my friends. I can also reach out to various labels in hopes of creating future collaborations. And, I can even call on a few creatives to help me map out a vision I have for an upcoming outfit post. Yet, if I never found the courage to take life by the reins and step out on a little thing called faith – my entire perception of this monumental strategy would have never changed.

Keep hustling!

So, to all my rising stars around the world, don’t be afraid to step out and be seen. The world is your nutshell and there are far too many people to pass by unnoticed. Besides, you never know who may come across. It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Create a bomb business card, amp up your social media game and scope out some local networking events! But, always remember: growth is inevitable. Shine bright!
