Life 101: 4 Ways to Build Peace of Mind and Manage Stress

Life is stressful. And, with that, there are various ways in which we adapt our lifestyles to help manage such unpredictable factors. Some people flock to the use of illegal remedies (starts singing, “Mary Jaaaannnee“) while others run to the nearest gym to “work it out” on the treadmill, but what appeals to you may not necessarily work for the next individual. Whether we’re tussling with a life-altering decision or a personal failure, maintaining a sense of comfort and calmness is key in moving beyond current trials and tribulations.

So, in this installment of #Life101, I’m examining three ways in which I continue to build a positive peace of mind while managing daily stresses.

1) Pray!

Whenever I get to a point where I feel all hope is lost, I get on my knees and I pray. Despite my personal issues surrounding the secular aspects of religion, I still find peace in bowing my head and having a direct conversation with God. There is no judgment, there is no conflict and there is no doubt of feeling useless or worthless – I mean, it all  just comes together so perfectly.

I can be on the brink of a major breakdown from work, family or even finances; however, I’ve realized that understanding your personal beliefs will help to sustain you in times of struggle, pain and impending fear. After a quick shoutout to the Man upstairs, not only do I feel enlightened and motivated but I am also overcome with this sense of security, stability and optimism. So, the next time you think your back is against the wall, take a quick moment to reflect and pray to a higher power. And, who knows, you may just get the answer to what you were looking for!

2) Indulge in a large cup of hot green tea.

Honestly, I became a green tea advocate when I hit grad school. No lie. It was the only thing that kept me going after-hours and it was ideal in keeping me calm and collected as I knocked out those statistics exercises. It was my saving grace.

This East Asian delicacy is a sure fire way to ease tensions with just a single sip. Aside from its powerful health benefits (including being loaded with antioxidants, reducing the risk of diabetes, lowering cholesterol, etc.), green tea is also one heck of a motivator! I find that combining a cup of green tea and any daunting task will give you an added boost of energy while also supplying a tasty alternative to the dense properties of coffee.

Want to amp up your dose of this herbal remedy? Try adding two teaspoons of organic raw honey! Trust me, you’ll fall in love.

3) Jam a set of your favorite soothing tunes!

Music is literally the best way to get a grasp on a positive peace of mind! All it takes is the right beat or maybe an excellent message to transform your frown into a radiating grin that transcends earthly bounds. Personally, whenever I’m feeling down or at a loss, I tend to gravitate towards a more intense artistry – enter John Coltrane, Amy Winehouse, Solange, Emeli Sande, Travis Greene and a little India Arie. Yes, I’m also a fan of hip-hop but there’s just something so comforting about being able to relate to every single lyrical metaphor that bounces on to a melodic rhythm. If you ask me, this in itself, is the epitome of freeing!

4) Embrace a new hobby.

If all else fails, distracting your mind from pressing matters always helps to alleviate consistent worry. Many of my closest girlfriends and coworkers suggest a myriad of activities such as working out, journaling, taking a walk, cooking, spending time with loved ones, dancing, reading and even the ever-popular “Netflix and chill” option. Taking time out for yourself is key when it comes to overcoming your deepest stressors and, while it’s easy to buckle under the pressure, discovering a new hobby and implementing its use in times of despair will certainly be your saving grace.
