Let’s face it: bossing up is not easy. You can post all the inspirational Instagram quotes until your heart’s content and you can peruse all the trending self-help books, but without implementing a life reset and fully preparing yourself mentally, physically and emotionally for the impending journey ahead, the path ahead can seem harder than imagined.
So, keep reading to discover the tips and tricks that helped transform my dogged, creative block into one of the most defining points of my personal life.
1) Take a step back to recharge.
Fun fact: I am a social worker by day; therefore, most of my time is spent documenting cases, communicating and visiting with clients, reading case files and (you guessed it), immensing myself in a realm of constant stress. So, yeah, I know a thing or two about recharging.
Stepping back and taking time for yourself is crucial: whether you’re working a 9 to 5 or wholeheartedly pouring yourself into that side hustle. If you needed, take advantage of using your paid time off. Refresh your mind and take time to find inspiration in the little things. Plan a museum visit, read enlightening articles, put your phone on “Do Not Disturb” and spend the day meditating, take photographs, visit a different side of town – just schedule time to get check in with your own thoughts to maintain the flow of continual inspiration.
2) Re-establish priorities.
Priorities are the cornerstones of bossing up. Everyone creates their own grand list of “things” that we peg as “important”, while not fully understanding the significance of their place within our lives. For some millennials, buying a home, becoming debt-free and having children are top priorities; yet, for others – simply getting through the day, keeping a smile on their face and having enough gas to get from Point A to Point B are equally as acheivable priorities.
Set aside what matters most to you, individually, and create a set of priorities that will encapsulate your long-term and/or short-goals for the future. Think of priorities as “living blueprints” for crafting your everyday lifestyle into the personification of your personal dream.
3) Tap into your tribe.
Ladies and gentlemen, connect with the tribe that surrounds you! Harness yourself with individuals who are also pushing towards positive elevation and progression. Watch the company you keep. Small circles are gold. Make it a point to learn from each other.
There have been countless instances where my girls have served as pillars of inspiration and motivation for me – whenever I feel down and out, my friends are there to always lift me up, while dressing me with the confidence to conquer any obstacle that comes my way.
4) Write everything down!
Maintain a running log of your random thoughts, ideas and aspirations so that you will be able to refer back to them on occasion. I find that writing down everything warrants me a firm foundation for building the life I aim to create for myself, blog content inspiration and successful execution of my day-to-day life. For my full-time job, I also write down all my important meetings, prioritized tasks and duties and daily deadlines that are crucial to my success.
Meanwhile, in a more intimate view, I jot down events that inspire me, books I plan to read, individual goals I wish to achieve and even places I plan to travel to. Moral of the story: keep a journal with you at all times, you never know when inspiration may come crashing.
5) Plan a getaway.
As a professional escape artist, I can teach you a thing or two about booking an impromptu flight and planning a staycation (stay tuned). A “getaway” does not have to be some elaborate trek to the bask in sprawling beauty of Rio de Janiero, it can actually be a quick 4-hour road trip to the next city over. I totally understand that, with financial budgets, bossing up can be delicate. But, where there’s a will, there’s a way.
Embrace the change of scenery, fall in love with the change of pace and free your mind of the confines of life back home. Find the hidden gems within your own state or city. Now, I’m not saying that you should dismiss the idea of traveling abroad, but just remember – when you need that immediate getaway, never limit yourself to only crossing the border.
